Other factors that we consider include the overall condition and mileage, but an online tool will provide you with a good starting point. You can also use Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds car appraisal tool to get an idea of what you could get for your vehicle when you trade it in.

After researching your vehicle’s trade-in value, you need to determine whether you still owe money on your loan. You can skip this step if your car loan is fully paid. If you’re unsure about how much you owe on your vehicle loan, it’s best to check before heading out to the dealership.

You may find that you owe more than your vehicle’s current value. When this happens, it’s called being upside down on your vehicle loan. If this is the case, you could be responsible for paying the difference between your loan amount and the vehicle value, even after a trade-in. Some dealerships will make you a deal to include the overage by adding it to your new vehicle purchase price. Either way, it’s best to know your loan situation before starting a trade.

What Do You Need To Trade In Your Vehicle?

You’ll need to bring some paperwork to the dealership if you intend to trade in your vehicle when you purchase your new car. The necessary paperwork includes the following:
