An Essential Guide to Cleaning the Interior of Your Car

Keeping a clean car might seem like just a matter of preference, but the significance is actually far greater. Not only will it help maintain your car’s appearance, but it will also help to hold its quality and value longer. What’s more, it could become a matter of safety. For example, smudged dirty windows may reduce visibility, or excessive trash may become a distraction while driving.

We recommend having your car detailed once a year and doing quick wipe-downs every few weeks, or weekly, depending on the type of use your car gets. Our team at Boch Chevrolet has come up with a quick 3-step guide to cleaning your interior, so you can master the technique and keep your car in tip-top shape with minimal time and effort.

Supplies

To start, you should gather all the supplies you’ll need. This includes:

Make sure the cleaning products you use are meant for your car’s surfaces and won’t end up staining or damaging it. If you aren’t sure, test it on a small inconspicuous area first.

STEP 1: DECLUTTER AND VACUUM

Next, grab the trash can and throw out all the trash in your car. Then, remove the miscellaneous stuff like maps, CDs, bags, and other objects that could get in the way while vacuuming.

Take out your floor mats and vacuum or shake them outside of your car. You can also move or remove seats if you want to do a really thorough job.

Once your car is all cleared out, vacuum all the dog hair, crumbs, and other loose particles on the floor, seats, dashboard, and all the little crevices. Brush attachments are great for cleaning vents or tight places.

STEP 2: SPRAY AND WIPE-DOWN

Once all the dust and dirt is vacuumed up, get out the cleaning products and rags for a good wipe-down.

A soft microfiber cloth in water and mild soap will work perfect for cleaning the vinyl, rubber, and plastic on your doors, floors, dashboard, center console, and other areas. Or you can use special car cleaning products recommended by our technicians at Boch Chevrolet.

A toothbrush or paintbrush work great for getting into air vents or small nooks and crannies. If you find stains, use a stain remover and clean rag to scrub them away.

If you have fabric seats, use an upholstery cleaner. If you have leather, use a leather cleaner and apply a leather conditioner afterward to prevent cracking and aging.

Lastly, spray the windows and windshield with glass cleaner until they’re crystal clear.

STEP 3: PUT EVERYTHING BACK

And just like that, you’re all done! Now put back your car mats and any other miscellaneous things that belong in your vehicle, and you’re ready to go. Just this simple cleaning process can make a world of difference for your passenger’s comfort, your self-esteem, and for preserving your vehicle’s reselling value. The sooner you get into the habit of regular cleaning, the better off you’ll be in the long run.
